Does car insurance cover towed caravans and trailers?
Ever hit the road with a caravan or trailer in tow? You might have wondered what would happen if that caravan or trailer caused damage to a third party’s vehicle or property.
Every insurance policy is different, but with Apia, third party property damage for caravans and trailers is covered if you have Apia Comprehensive, Third Party , and Third Party Fire & Theft Car Insurance policies.*
But what about damage to your caravan, trailer, or animal transport float? For that, you may want to consider Apia Caravan Insurance.
What does Apia Caravan Insurance cover?
Caravans and trailers spend a lot of time on the road. They can sustain more damage than cars and can be expensive to tow.
Apia Caravan Insurance provides comprehensive cover for your caravan or trailer – whether stationary or being towed. For caravans, you also have the option of choosing on-site only cover or Australia wide road coverage.
Apia covers accidental loss or damage to your caravan during the period of insurance, which includes:
- hail
- storm and cyclones
- fire
- theft or attempted theft, and
- collision.*
Additional cover applies if your caravan is less than two years old. If it’s stolen or damaged in an incident, and we accept your claim as a total loss, we’ll replace it with a new one. The replacement will be a similar make and model, including similar fixtures and fittings.*
To take advantage of this cover, the following must apply:
- You’re the first registered owner of the caravan, or the first owner of an unregistered on-site caravan, or you purchased an ex-demo caravan model from a licensed caravan dealer who was the first owner; and
- the damage to your caravan occurred less than two years from the date of original registration, or from the date of purchase for an unregistered on-site caravan; and
- anyone who financed your caravan provides us with written consent to us replacing your caravan.
Limits and exclusions apply, so please read the PDS .
What if I need temporary accommodation following an incident?
Whether you’re travelling with your caravan or it’s your usual on-site home, we’ll provide cover for temporary accommodation if your caravan is not fit to stay in following an incident – including theft. This also includes some extra costs to accommodate any domestic pets living or travelling with you.*
We also cover additional after-claim expenses you may incur, such as:
- costs for meals
- food spoilage, and
- supplementary living expenses.
See the PDS for the full limits and exclusions.
Are personal belongings covered under my Apia Caravan Insurance policy?
Usually yes – but only for caravans and not for trailers or animal transport floats.
Personal belongings include clothes, electronic devices, sporting equipment, and more.
Your Apia Caravan Insurance policy automatically comes with included Contents cover for up to $1,000 in total for all contents per incident. Some items like bicycles or fishing equipment have unique fixed limits. However, you can choose to increase the coverage beyond these limits by purchasing optional Contents cover, which will be shown on your certificate of insurance.
To see the full details of what is and isn’t covered, check out the PDS.
What about my legal liability when using a caravan or trailer?
Your Apia Caravan Insurance covers you for legal liability in case of injury to someone else or damage to their property – for up to $20 million including associated legal costs. We also cover you or a family member for personal legal liability when your caravan is your usual home.
Does Caravan Insurance cover motorhomes?
Motorhomes are not covered under Apia Caravan Insurance. Apia offers a separate Motorhome Insurance to provide comprehensive cover for all your motorhome needs.
