Senior style icons: fashion and trends for the ageless

Rather than blending into the background, several fashion-forward seniors, both here and abroad, are proving that style is dynamic, distinct and deeply personal. Placing a huge emphasis on personal expression, showcasing a little curiosity and playfulness, and unapologetically adopting modern trends to suit their sense of style, these seniors will inspire you to rethink fashion.

Sarah Jane Adams

Social media superstar, author and jewellery designer, Sarah Jane Adams is one of Australia’s most recognisable senior style icons. Born in England and now based in Sydney, she has worked with adidas (#mywrinklesaremystripes), published her own memoir Life in a Box, and even starred in Celebrity Big Brother. While designing jewellery is her true passion, her Instagram shows her travels through India, her eclectic sense of fashion style, and the time she takes out to spend with friends.

Violeta Zuvela

At 59, influencer, model, mother of five and grandmother, Violeta Zuvela shows age is just a number and style is deeply personal. Signed to Chadwick modelling agency, when Zuvela’s not on the runway at Fashion Week, she shares her fashion tips and the beauty products she loves on her Instagram. Curating a sophisticated and classic sense of style, Zuvela is known for showcasing her wardrobe staples, including tailored leather pieces, pantsuits, block colours, and the occasional exquisite ball gown.

Ginger and Carman

TikTok stars Ginger and Carman bring joy to every outrageous video they post. Hailing from Melbourne, the two friends are known for their love of vintage shopping, stylish sunglasses, offbeat humour, excellent dance moves, and refusal to grow up. Most of all, they show that style can be less about clothes and more about fun, friendship, laughter and lifestyle. The internet agrees, with their posts attracting over 8 million likes.

Further abroad

Beyond Australia, there is an incredible breath of seniors leading the fashion pack in unusual ways. One of the best-known is Professor Lyn Slater, now aged 70, who began a fashion blog for seniors, was mistaken for a style editor on the streets of New York, wrote a new book How to Be Old, and goes by the moniker @Iconaccidental. Also worth following is Grece Ghanem, a former microbiologist turned fashion influencer with over 1.8 million followers on Instagram known for her designer street style. Leading the way for men is Nickelson Wooster, a former fashion retailer with a love of travel and a penchant for casual style.
